Fastening tango heels before dancing

Heel Lab · To each their heel

Which heel
supports your dance?

A one-time, personalised lab exploring the relationship between heel height, grounding, axis and walking in dance.

What is Heel Lab

Understand how heel height
meets your body.

Heel Lab is a one-time personalised lab for dancers who wear heels and want to understand how heel height interacts with their body - influencing balance, posture, weight transfer and movement quality.

Developed in collaboration with Julio Alvarez and within the dialogue of Axis & Alchemy, Heel Lab brings together guided observation, education, and practical integration to support conscious heel use at a specific moment in one's practice, without replacing ongoing work.

  1. Why heels matter

In tango, heels are not just an aesthetic choice. They affect body mechanics, postural organisation and the way weight is transferred.

Heel Lab helps you understand which heel height works best for your body, under which conditions and for how long - and what supportive work keeps your dance sustainable, alive and expressive.

  2. Walking as observation

Walking, barefoot and in heels, is the main observation tool: it clearly reveals grounding strategies, weight transfer and axis organisation.

The same information then shows up in tango steps and positions.

Julio Alvarez, Argentine tango maestro and researcher

Created in collaboration

Clinical observation
meets tango.

Heel Lab is the result of an ongoing dialogue between clinical observation, embodied research, and tango practice.

It was developed through discussion, brainstorming, and shared exploration - merging my clinical, personal, and professional experience with the extensive knowledge of tango technique, biomechanics, musicality, and artistic expression of Argentine Tango Maestro Julio Alvarez.

This collaboration brings together two complementary perspectives: movement education grounded in anatomy and function, and the lived intelligence of tango as an expressive art.

In addition to this shared conceptual work, Heel Lab includes applied material performed by Julio, offering a rare opportunity to observe movement quality, timing, weight transfer, and axis organization from within the Heel Lab framework.

Questions

Frequently asked
questions

Is Heel Lab only for tango dancers?

It was born in tango, and walking and tango positions are at its centre. It is useful for anyone who dances, works or moves in heels and wants to understand what happens in the body.

Will you tell me the "right" heel height?

There is no perfect heel in absolute terms. Heel Lab helps you understand which height works for your body now, under which conditions and for how long, and what work makes wearing heels more stable and sustainable.

Do I need Axis & Alchemy?

No. Heel Lab can be taken on its own. It is also included at no extra cost in the Premium plan.

How do I take part?

Places are limited. After payment on our secure platform you receive instructions to fill in the pre-consultation form and send your video, barefoot and in heels.
